Nous avons appris il y a quelques semaines la disparition précoce de Philippe « Doudou » Cuillerier suite à « une longue maladie ». C’est un personnage important de la galaxie Django qui s’en est allé : passeur, éducateur, animateur, créateur, formateur… Laissons la parole à Francis Couvreux qui l ‘a bien connu et a accepté que soit publié ici son bel hommage.

Nous vivons et nous mourons sans savoir pourquoi. Doudou vient de nous quitter, emporté par le crabe à l’âge de 62 ans. Tous ceux, amis, musiciens qui ont eu la chance de côtoyer cette belle âme sont tristes. Je m’associe à la peine de sa famille, à celle de Victorine Martin, sa compagne.
Né en 1961 dans une famille de musiciens, Doudou a commencé par la guitare picking style Dadi avant d s’enthousiasmer pour la guitare jazz et la musique de Django. Dès 1984, on le voit faire ses classes aux côtés d’Angélo Debarre. Son drive impeccable en fait rapidement un accompagnateur très recherché. Il se produit et enregistre avec tous les cadors du style : Angélo, bien sûr, mais aussi Romane, Babik Reinhardt, Rodolphe Raffali, Tchavolo Schmitt, Christophe Lartilleux (Latcho Drom mais aussi Aman Michto avec deux musiciens nord africains), Patrick Saussois, Christian Escoudé, Lemmy Constantine, Ludovic Beier… Au début des années 90, Doudou fonde avec le guitariste Max Robin, le Fernando Jazz gang, formation qui met aussi en avant ses talents de chanteur ; sur fond de jazz gitano parisien pointe un crooner avec des accents à la Michel Legrand. En 94 le groupe enregistre un album qui deviendra une référence pour beaucoup d’aficionados, faisant connaitre à pas mal de monde les belles chansons en romanès de Schnuckenack Reinhardt ( Fuli tschaï, O letschto gurgo, Tu Djaial..). C’est à cette époque que je l’ai connu en programmant Le Fernando jazz gang à St Julien les villas (10) ; un homme d’une infinie gentillesse, humble, généreux, aimant plaisanter, bref très sympathique, que j’aurai chaque fois le même plaisir à retrouver lors de nombreux concerts mais aussi régulièrement sur l’ile du berceau, lors du festival de Samois.
Pionnier de la promotion de ce swing dit manouche, à une époque où il n’était pas encore à la mode, grand connaisseur de cette musique, Doudou a participé à la création de « French guitar », revue fondée par Romane, avant de diriger lui-même un petit bulletin « L’Echo des cuillères », tout ceci avant internet. N’oublions pas non plus ses talents de pédagogue (il donna des stages de guitare manouche dans tout l’hexagone).
Doudou a monté par la suite « Doudou swing », trio composé de Victorine Martin à la guitare et Antonio Licusati à la contrebasse (et parfois des invités) avec lequel il enregistra deux disques chez Frémeaux, qui font la part belle aux chansons (Doudou en a toujours écrit et il aime chanter, faire swinguer les textes avec légèreté et un ton frais, personnel) dont un destiné aux enfants « Monsieur Django et Mme Swing » (Doudou a toujours eu un feeling particulier avec les gosses). Ces dernières années il faisait partie du bien nommé Django all stars (Samson Schmitt, Ludovic Beier, Pierre Blanchard, Antonio Licusati), formation top niveau invitée chaque année aux Etas Unis. Il venait d’enregistrer « Django 70 » avec Ludo Beier et Antonio Licusati. Latcho drom mon Doudou ; tu seras toujours dans nos cœurs.

We learned a few weeks ago about the premature passing of Philippe « Doudou » Cuillerier following « a long illness. » He was an important figure in the Django universe: a facilitator, educator, entertainer, creator, and instructor. Let’s hear from Francis Couvreux, who knew him well and has allowed his beautiful tribute to be published here.
We live and die without knowing why. Doudou has just left us, taken by cancer at the age of 62. All those friends and musicians who had the chance to know this beautiful soul are saddened. I share the grief with his family and his partner, Victorine Martin.
A pioneer in promoting this so-called gypsy swing at a time when it was not yet in vogue, a great connoisseur of this music, Doudou was involved in the creation of « French guitar, » a magazine founded by Romane, before running his own small newsletter « L’Echo des cuillères, » all this before the internet era. Let’s not forget his pedagogical talents (he conducted gypsy guitar workshops throughout the country).

In 1994, the group recorded an album that became a reference for many aficionados, introducing a lot of people to the beautiful Romanes songs of Schnuckenack Reinhardt (Fuli tschaï, O letschto gurgo, Tu Djaial…). It was during this time that I got to know him when I programmed Le Fernando Jazz Gang in St Julien les villas (10); a man of infinite kindness, humble, generous, and fond of jokes – in short, very friendly, and I always had the same pleasure of meeting him at numerous concerts and regularly on L’île du berceau during the Samois festival.
Later, Doudou formed « Doudou swing, » a trio composed of Victorine Martin on guitar and Antonio Licusati on double bass (and sometimes guests) with whom he recorded two albums for Frémeaux, which highlighted the songs (Doudou has always been a songwriter, and he loves singing, infusing the lyrics with lightness and a fresh, personal touch), including one for children titled « Monsieur Django et Mme Swing » (Doudou always had a special connection with kids). In recent years, he was part of the aptly named Django all stars (Samson Schmitt, Ludovic Beier, Pierre Blanchard, Antonio Licusati), a top-level ensemble invited every year to the United States.
